Prague, Czech Republic - November 2012

Prague, Czech Republic - November 18, 2012

Today I took a three hour free walking tour of Prague - free means tips.  The guide was amazing, talking nonstop.  She gave us 2000 years of history in 7 minutes.  Prague, like most of Eastern Europe still has plenty of communist influence.  The buildings are not like those in Russia, but many are definitely in need of repair.

Prague was a lot larger than I thought.  It is a beautiful city with plenty of sights.  Below are some of the highlights.

This is the central square.  I took the tram from my guest house.  The trams are very efficient and cheap.

This clock dates back to 1410.  The automation was added later.

Can you believe this is a statue of Mozart?

One of the department stores in Prague

The guide said this is the only clock in the world that runs backwards.

I had lunch in a cycling cafe.

The trams were the easiest way around town.

One of the many Jewish Synagogues

The Jewish history of Prague is very interesting.  The Jewish Ghetto is basically intact.  The Nazis wanted to leave Prague as a museum for an extinct race.  Good thing they never got their wish.

Today I took a tour to the Terezin Concentration Camp.  It was upsetting, but nothing like Auschwitz.  This camp was mainly a work camp, and few were killed here.  Unfortunately most were sent to the death camps.

It is amazing that the residents returned to the city after the war, as if nothing happened.

This is back in Prague, looking across the river.

This is a comic statue, like many in Prague.  The two men, representing the European Union are pissing on the Czech Republic.

Prague was an amazing city.  It is one I will love to revisit in the summer.
