Singapore - October 2012

September 28, 2012 - Orlando, Florida to New York City

I guess there is no better time to start my blog then now.  My first flight from Orlando to New York was uneventful.  It was the first time this American Airlines' flight was on time in over a week.

At JFK I made my way to the BA lounge for dinner before my 1:30 am flight to Hong Kong.  I hope to board the plane and fall asleep.  It is a 16 hour flight so I'll get to watch lots of movies and drink plenty of 18 year old single malt whiskey.

I had a light dinner in the lounge, which BA serves their passengers so they can sleep the entire flight.

After dinner I relaxed in the lounge before boarding the long, long flight.

September 29, 2012 - New York, JFK to Hong Kong

I got on the plane and had a glass of champagne before falling asleep (no sleeping pill needed).

I really don't know if it is Saturday or Sunday, since I can never figure out the international date line logic.

One of the good things about flying to Hong Kong is that you don't have to reset your watch.  The time change is 12 hours.

After I woke up I had a freshly prepared breakfast.  There is nothing better then Cathay Pacific first class service.

I watched three movies - Men in Black 3, Brave and Battleship - all enjoyable but not really good.

September 30, 2012 - Hong Kong to Singapore

I arrived at 5am after just having had my dinner before landing.  I can feel the jet lag already.  I checked the flight path after I landed.  I didn't even cross the Pacific.  The plane flew northeast over Newfoundland, the north pole, Mongolia, and China before landing in Hong Kong.

I had my second breakfast in the Cathay Pacific lounge.  The next flight was only three and a half hours to Singapore.  I had the same seat on the same plane.

I took the bus to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.  What a fantastic building.

After a short nap I walked in the new Gardens on the Bay.  It reminded me of the movie Avatar, especially the artificial trees.

Dinner was amazing - and I ate too much.  Won ton soup (8 wantons) and 6 steamed dumplings.  Now it is time for bed.

After a few drinks to fell quickly asleep.

I was wide awake at 6am, so I decided to get my morning exercise.  I wanted to walk to some interesting sculptures I had seen during yesterday's bus ride to the hotel.  After three miles of wandering I gave up.  I did get some good pictures of my hotel, the science museum and the city.

I then went to the top floor of the hotel and was awestruck.  The view was breathtaking, the pool was unbelievable.  Now I know why they charge a fortune to stay here.

October 1, 2012 - Singapore

My goal today was to visit Little India and buy a belt and replacement sunglasses.  Mission accomplished.  I got there using the subway.  It is now my main means of transportation - clean, easy to use, it goes everywhere and is cheap.

In the afternoon I finished my first book on the trip and then relaxed at the beautiful pool.

Dinner was in Chinatown with Peking Duck.  Luckily I found a restaurant that served 1/4.  I think it was the same restaurant I went to six months ago.  Chinatown at night is similar to most Asian countries.  The streets become a colorful night market with vendors selling the same crap all over the world.

I made it back to see the nighttime light show at the Gardens by the Sea.

October 2, 2012 - Singapore

Today's morning walk was about 4 or 5 miles.  I got some great pictures of the skyscrapers and the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

I visited Sentosa Island most of the day.  It is an entertainment and beach resort, and also the home of Universal Studios, Singapore.  The admission was only about $60, but I didn't think it would be that much fun alone.

I took the monorail to the beach station.  I visited three of the beaches and took a narrow suspension bridge to the southern most point of continental Asia.  Like the Key West of Asia.

The admission price to all the other attractions was outrageous.  Good thing they have a package price, but I just walked and looked.  The one that I was tempted to try was the indoor skydiving, but I chickened out.

This evening I went to Clarke Quay, where once stood warehouses, now stands hundreds of restaurants from around the world.  I selected Thai and only burned my tongue once on the hot chili.  It was fun watching the tourist river boats pass every few minutes.

October 3, 2012 - Singapore

Instead of going out for breakfast, I decided to try the hotel.  Well at $33 plus tax and tip for the buffet, I headed for the nearest Starbucks.  The buffet prices were higher then Las Vegas.

I went to the Singapore Botanical Gardens to revisit the Orchid Garden.  I think I took another 100 pictures.  I've never seen so many perfect orchids.  They must have a staff of hundreds to maintain the picture perfect plants.

Then I went to The Long Bar in Raffles Hotel, where the Singapore Sling was invented.  They probably sell a  million a week.  At $24 each that's a lot of slinging.  Its probably the most expensive drink I've ever ordered but well worth it for the atmosphere and experience.

I enjoyed the afternoon at the rooftop garden and pool.

For my last meal in Singapore I had Chinese dumplings and won ton soup.  Walking back to my hotel I passed the casino.  I had eight Singapore dollars left so I decided to gamble.  After three minutes I won a thousand dollars.  Just joking.  It was fun and I had to get rid of the money anyway.

I'll pack in the morning for my flights to Hong Kong and then Mumbai.

My three days here went very quickly and I would definitely return.

October 4, 2012 - Singapore to Hong Kong to Mumbai, India

Today was a travel day.  I am going to miss the fantastic Marina Bay Sands Hotel.  My last glimpse was while taking the shuttle bus back to the airport.

I am becoming spoiled with the Cathay Pacific ground staff and flight crew.  All they think about is service - just like American and the other US carriers.

The lounge in Singapore was just okay, not like their home base lounges in Hong Kong.

The flight was great, as usual - good food, drinks and service.  I watched the latest Spiderman movie which must have been awesome in 3D.

I'm now in The Pier, one of the Hong Kong first class lounges, with food and drink fit for a king.  It is probably my favorite lounge in the world.  I decided to eat dinner here instead of on the plane.  I had fillet mignon and seared tuna.  But my favorite was the desert of chocolate cake and truffles.  All that with champagne.

The flight was a short five and a half hours.  I had a few drinks (inferior brands to first class) and watched a movies about Abraham Lincoln fighting vampires.  Definitely not Twilight caliber.  I slept the second half of the flight.

We arrived in Mumbai (Bombay) around 11:30pm, 2:00am Singapore time.  Changing the half hour is really confusing.  I took a prepaid taxi - highly recommended - and arrived at the JW Marriott.

I went to bed soon after.

Mumbai, India - October 2012

October 5, 2012 - Mumbai, India

I was very surprised with Mumbai.  It was not nearly as dirty as I expected and there weren't animals in the streets.  But the traffic was horrendous.  I went to a local restaurant for breakfast.  I had absolutely no idea what I ate but it was a vegetarian restaurant so it was probably a vegetable concoction.

I then walked up and down the main streets.  You constantly hear the horns blaring and there is not a crosswalk for pedestrians.  You take your life in your hands when you cross the street.

In the afternoon I contacted a local chemist, recommended by the hotel, and ordered most of my prescriptions.  They will be delivered this afternoon and are much, much cheaper then at home.

In the evening I had an adventure I will not soon forget.  I met my local guide and took a nighttime motorcycle ride through Mumbai.  Whatever traffic laws there are were not being obeyed.  Was that a red light we just went through?  But I did survive and will attempt this fate again tomorrow night.  Imagine this - we had dinner at a Chinese restaurant in India.  It was excellent however.

Most of the buildings were in ill repair.

October 6, 2012 - Mumbai, India

Today I played super tourist.  I wanted to see the Gateway to India monument.  I had to figure out how to get there.  First I tried a tuk tuk, but the drivers speak no English.  I did find out that they are not allowed in that part of city.  That made no sense to me at all since nobody obeys any traffic laws.  Finally I hired a private car with air conditioned and a driver who spoke English.

So off I went on my adventure.  The first stop was the Bandra Worli Sea Link that was a short cut to the south part of Mumbai.   Next we stopped at a small Buddhist temple.

After that we visited a park that had an overlook of South Mumbai.  The park had flowers and huge topiaries.

The traffic was hell. I don't know how anyone can drive in Mumbai.  We eventually made it to the Gateway of India.  While not very impressive it was nice to see it.  We were now at the southern tip of Mumbai.  I spend some time visiting the five star Taj Mahal hotel.

After lunch we continued our journey.  We stopped at a number of impressive government buildings.  I must mention that most of the buildings in Mumbai have not been painted since the English occupation ended.  This is true in the wealthy areas as well as its poor.

Next we stopped at the Queen Victoria train station. They changed the name to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.  I wanted to go inside but there was no way to get across the traffic.

Queen Victoria Train Station

Our final stop was was Dhobi Ghat which is where they still do laundry for all the large hotels in the river.  You could see thousands of sheets and towels and clothes hanging everywhere.

That evening my tour guide from last night came by.  Tonight went to a Hari Krishna Temple.  The tune they chant is still in my head.

We had some excellent Indian food for dinner.  That makes sense because I am in India.

October 7, 2012 - Mumbai, India

Today will be a day of leisure.  I can't face the traffic a second day in a row.  So this morning I went out for a nice cappuccino.  I follow that with getting some cash at an ATM.  Its amazing how many rupees I spent. The exchange rate is about 50 to 1, so a cup of coffee cost about 100.  I went to the fitness center for the first time on my vacation.

I went to the pool - finishing my book on tape, and making a good dent in my Kindle book.  It is so much better then lugging books around.

October 8, 2012 - Mumbai, India

Another day of relaxation.  The tragedy of the day was losing all my library kindle books.  The lending period had expired so whenever I opened them I had to make sure that I wasn't connected to the Internet.  I forgot once and in two seconds all my library books were gone.

So I signed onto the library site and downloaded eight more.  The book I was in the middle of was unavailable, so I will have to wait on that one.  So in three weeks I will have to avoid reading while the Internet is on.

Not much else happened today.  I'm in the hotel lobby waiting to take a cab to the airport.  My flight is at 1:30 am - great.

So I saved 500 rupees ($10) to get to the airport.  At 9:00 pm I got my luggage and the concierge let me take the hotel limo for free.  I don't think I can ever get used to the traffic here.  But I made it to the airport on time.

Then security would not let me in since I didn't have a written confirmation.  Finally a Cathay agent took my passport (scary) to get my boarding pass.  Security was worse then anywhere in the world xrays, pat downs, strip search - not.  Finally I made it through only to find out the BA lounge wasn't open yet.  And when it did open I found out it was a "dry day" - no alcohol until after midnight.  I survived the ordeal and got on the plane at 1:30 am.  As soon as we took off I was out until breakfast.

October 9, 2012 - Mumbai, India to Hong Kong to Sydney, Australia

I arrived in Hong Kong at 10:00 am.  I flew business class from Mumbai and will be in Business to Sydney on Qantas, but my boarding pass said first - so I'm back in the amazing Cathay first class lounge.  I'm in a private day room where I can sleep.  Traveling does have some great moments.

And the champagne keeps flowing.  And the chocolate is amazing, as is the food.  After six hours I moved to the Qantas first class lounge.  Definitely a step down.  But I will survive (sounds like a song lyric).

My flight is from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am.  I think this is the first time I've slept on planes two nights in a row.

Qantas changed the equipment so there is no first class cabin, but since I was planning on sleeping all night it really didn't matter.  And Qantas is refunding 800 dollars, which is probably what I paid for the flight.

So I had a meal, had a few drinks, and slept the rest of the flight.

October 10, 2012 - Sydney, Australia to Brisbane, Australia

I was really tired after 2 all night flights.  I was in Sydney and had a short flight to Brisbane.  I transferred from the international to domestic terminal and just made my flight.

I took the air train into town and walked a few blocks to my hotel.  I rented an apartment hotel here mainly because it had a washing machine.  There's a limit to the number of times you can re wear your clothes.

I took a nap before orienting myself with the city.

I had a nice meal in Chinatown for dinner.
